Probably my favorite uptown bar. St. Joe's has a great jukebox, chill atmosphere, with a long bar room that leads to a pool table. Keep walking and you get to a good sized dimly lit patio, which is dog friendly. The bar tenders know what they're doing!! Everyone raves about the blueberry mojitos, but I'm partial to the Mint Julep and Pimm's Cup when it's hot out and Old Fashioneds when it's cold out. Also, they have a great beer selection

A neighborhood corner bar on Magazine located across from Whole Foods, with a Catholic theme...hence the name. On a Friday night it can get crowded, but the wait for a drink wasn't bad. Famous for their mojitos. I went with a draft Canebreak (delightful!) instead while my friend had a gin & tonic. Bartenders were friendly, as friendly as they could be on a crowded Friday night. Note: Don't sit on the pew to the right of the pool table if you aren't ok with moving when someone has to make a shot. We sat before people were playing and quickly found out this is not an ideal spot. No worries...we just shoved over when needed. Great local bar, with a good location and cool vibe. Man, I do love this city and our bars!

St joes has the best mojito in town! Patio is a plus. Hard to come by. Every time I'm in there it's dead. Old guy at the bar is really nice. I wish they had food and were a little less divey.

I like this place, its a cool spot to visit , but not a big fave of mine since im a beer drinker. The atmosphere is a bit odd and uncomfortable. I am raised Catholic, so that means built in guilt. There is alot of church stuff in here that is a bit unsettling to me. Its cool, dont get me wrong, just strange. Its not like drinking beer at a Church fair or spaghetti dinner in a cafeteria. So because im a beer drinker, I have a overwhelming urge to expand my taste and drink cocktails like a grown up. This place is known for the mojito and by golly thats what im gonna drink. I tried a minty kinda mojito. Alot of fuss went into it. The muddling and the pomp and circumstance was neat and cool. I was feeling like a sophisticated adult already. All quality stuff went into it..... but....just wasnt the thing for me. I tried another one, different flavor....think it was a raspberry concoction. Was tasty but still i am longing for a beer. If mojitos is your thing or you wanna try one, I believe this may be the place to try it. There was no eye rolling when ordering one, the amount of time and work put into each drink is a labor of love and the staff seemed unfazed by it, so that would be my biggest reason to recommend visiting St. Joe. Just wasnt for me, but I'll gladly try it again.

Convenient location and nice ambiance. I didn't particularly care for the blueberry mojito (which is what they are known for) because I kept coming across seeds or something in my drink...not sure what it was but not a fan. Would go back to try something else.

I'm not even a huge mojito fan, but their blueberry mojitos are AMAZING. Cool atmosphere, pool table, and friendly staff. My only complaint is how crowded it can get being such a small place... Overall definitely worth checking out!

I don't get why this is classified as a dive bar; it's not super classy, but it's definitely not dive-y either. It's in between, a regular bar. The blueberry mojitos are good, no questions asked. I love the church decor but I'm not a religious person so they don't offend me. The bartenders are okay, it can be a PITA to get their attention sometimes. I prefer this place earlier rather than later and during the week because the crowd can become a bit hipster-y. I do like this place but I just wanna sit down, have a drink, and chat. When this place is crowded that can be difficult. So, great blueberry mojitos, great decor, NON-SMOKING (LOVE IT!!!), so-so service, hipster-y crowds later at night and on weekends. I'll definitely be going back here but I won't say a lot of that has to do with the fact that I live within walking distance. They do have 1 TV so it's a good place to watch Saints games if you want more low-key and non-smoking.

Definitely worth the trek from the French Quarter for the blueberry mojitos and the laid back atmosphere

St. Joe's kind of freaked me out. Maybe it was the religious symbols on display, but something in this bar made me feel a little uneasy. It kind of felt like God was looking down and judging me when all I wanted was a few beers. Despite the overwhelming guilt I felt, the bar was not all that bad. The patio area seemed very cool, but was too crowded to try and hang out there. The main bar area was large, but too narrow to hang out with friends without being in someone's way. The selection of beers was pretty good, including several reasonably priced specials. Bartenders struggled to keep up with the large crowd, but were friendly. While I don't think St. Joe's will become one of my regular haunts, if asked, i would come here again.

What the hell, I haven't reviewed St Joe's yet? No, no, let's leave hell out of it. St. Joe's is can be a religious experience... at times. Not on weekend nights, though. I worship on weeknights better when mass is less full. I love the back where you can sit in the chapel, a rather idyllic courtyard or if you smoke, kneel at the pew, I mean, bar area back there, too. As many times as I've been here, I've yet to form a bond with the ministers behind the bar.Bless me father, I want to sin... and you kind of ignore me. All in all, a decent place to worship. But I'm not yet really devout.

Big fan of St. Joes and it has me thinking its been far too long since I have frequented this place. I don't order a mojito normally, but when I'm here i do! They are awesome! I know the blueberry is popular but I stick to the classic as it has never let me down. I like to hang out towards the back in the patio area where you can spread out a little more with some friends. The inside portion doesn't make much sense for groups. Overall, cool little place on Magazine to grab a drink.

  • Lindsay A.

I like the aesthetic that St. Joe's is going for, it has an old timey slightly beat up bar feel to it that makes comfortable. I appreciate that smoking is limited to the back patio. Since the bar itself is such a small space, I can imagine that smoke might become overwhelming. I like that they have NOLA Brewing beers on tap. I was not impressed by the actual bartender on my recent visit, he was inattentive and off in la-la land most of the time. I did have some sympathy for him though because he had to crank out one of those blueberry mojitos every 2 minutes. I did not really hang out in the back bar area and maybe I would have been more comfortable back there. The front of the bar was not really my crowd, a few too many popped collars I guess, but nice overall and I would stop in for another drink if I happen to be in the area.

I don't get the hype. Maybe not so much on Yelp, but I've definitely heard that St. Joe's was the greatest shit ever in some circles I run with (or.. around). Stopped by on a Thursday night to watch the Lakers game and it was mad packed with obnoxious douchebags pushing up against me. What? Okay. I'm sitting on this stool already so why are you pushing me over, asshole. Ended up leaving and watching the rest of the game at home. Beer selection wasn't bad but the bartenders were way too rushed and it took forever to get a pint, even sitting at the bar. Decor was cool. I like the crazy chandeliers done up in huge oversized Xmas ornaments for the holidays and the ornate Catholic paintings. Prices were fine but too much compared to the Red Door (although this is Uptown). I might give it another chance but probably not of my own accord.

St. Joes is known for their mojitos- they make a pretty good blueberry mojito! I once got an off the menu Strawberry mojito because the bartender randomly picked up strawberries from Whole Foods and decided to make a few mojitos with it. It was delicious and he did throw in the disclaimer that it was a random special and not to expect it all the time, lol! It is really awesome that they've decided to go smoke-free inside, because smelling like an ashtray when I get home is the worst part of going out. Kudos to St. Joes!! The outdoor patio out back is pretty nice, it doesn't feel like you're outside, the chinese lanterns give it a dim lighting, and there is a bar back there too- the outdoor patio is awesome for groups since there are plenty of tables/chairs. The indoor bar gets crowded and cramped easily.

Located on the Corner of Magazine and St. Joseph is a lovely little place called St. Joe's. The outside isn't that grand looking, but they have a pretty cool sign, so don't let the outward appearance worry you. Inside it's great. It's small, sure, but there is a fully-stocked bar and the perfect amount of ambient lighting. And if you have any sort of Catholic background, you'll notice the many little church-like things used to decorate (like pews, crosses, and candles). The front area is not that spacey, so when the crowd comes in, I suggest you move to the patio area in the back. It has a very cathedral-like feel to it. Don't worry about getting cold in the winter because they have heat lamps as well as a separate bar to keep you warm and toasted. I'm sure the other reviews for St. Joe's mention their famous beverage: the Blueberry Mojito. It's absolutely delicious. It comes in a snifter glass with mint leaves and crushed blueberries on the bottom (and it's only $6!). This is definitely my drink of choice when at St. Joe's. But be careful! They're so good that they can prove to be pretty dangerous (unless that's what you're going for of course). If you haven't been to St. Joe's yet and you love mojitos or blueberries, you definitely should try this place.

A very nice bar on Magazine. I love the decor of the patio, which is where I'm exiled to now that there's no smoking inside. I usually go uptown when I want a few drinks since there are fewer tourists and this is one of the better bars in the area. It usually isn't overcrowded, which I love, and the bartenders are friendly. The ambiance of the Asian and Cuban inspired patio is what keeps me coming back though.

Not exactly a dive, more like a folkloric tomb of awesome, St. Joe's is a great neighborhood bar with strong drinks, a chill vibe, an accommodating bartender, a covered outdoor garden and a main room that stays dark and cool on the hottest New Orleans Day. Can't tell you about any other drink - I was too busy downing afternoon blueberry mojitos.

    (4)
  • Pamela A.

To me, St. Joes is quintessential New Orleans. Maybe it's the many nights I spent here when I should have been doing homework, or nostalgia for the place where we attempted to bring euro cafe culture back via our political discussion group " Poli Fli". Whether the blueberry mojitos were ever meant to be the signature drink, or if it just sort of happened de facto; it's no joke...they rock.

  • Shannon S.

This is always a pretty consistently good bar with a decent crowd. They have gone non-smoking in the main part of the bar but they allow smoking on the back "patio" which isn't really much of a patio as it is all enclosed. They have a pool table crammed in between the bathrooms and the men's bathroom is among the smallest of any bar in New Orleans. They are noted for their mixed drinks and particularly for their blueberry mojito. I've never seen this bar get slam packed like some other establishments and it always seems you can generally find a place to sit and relax while you enjoy your drink.

Best drinks including the fresh made mojhito. Good roots music, TV rarely on, just certain games. Great bartenders, smoke free. Great out door bar out back.

The Sunday night bartender is really cute, but he acts all inaccessible. I thought we had a rapport because we were talking about poetry for a minute, but I gave him my phone number and he never called me back. What a jerk. The mojitos are disgusting. They taste like the bottom of fat people's feet. I'm sure all you experienced bargoers wouldn't order one anyway because you know how d-baggy it is to make a bartender fix such a time-consuming drink. But if you were thinking about it anyway, don't bother. Waste of your money. You're best off ordering one of the many fine bottled beers from their copious selection. If you must order a cocktail, do it when that red-headed guy is workin behind the bar. He knows what he's doing. Also he's really really nice, but I wonder if he's not just making fun of us all. Okay, now here's the numero uno absolute don't-feed-em-after-midnight most important tip for St Joe's: Do not talk to the Monday night doorman. Don't try to start a convo about what he's reading, or crack a joke if checks your ID, or otherwise engage him in any manner whatsoever. It will not be a pleasant experience for you. I have seen grown women walk away crying after simply going over to say soemthing about his dog. I don't think he'll bother you in any way if you keep your distance. But he just seems to be a very deep kind of misanthrope or something. Whatever. I guess it's not really his job to talk to you just because you're in the place where he works. He seems to do a good job keeping the underage riff-raff out, and you probably don't want to be his friend anyway. Let him do his job checking IDs and just leave him to his stupid crossword is my advice.

if you're into mojitos - which i'm not really - best blueberry mojito in town. the ONLY setback from this is that the bartender has to make 5 or 6 of them at a time and it makes us beer and whiskey (straight whiskey) drinkers wait a little while. best bar uptown to just chill. great back porch with oriental lanterns and lots of trees. LOTS of great scenery as well. great staff too.

This is one of several spots that are great on a relatively laid-back Magazine night. It's a bit on the uptown side of most of the bars so it takes a little commitment, but I think it's worth it. There is a comfortable back patio and good drinks. The mojitos are really great, and I'm not a rum drinker...at all. Favorites are: Blueberry mojito

One of my favorite dive bars to frequent. St. Joe's is known for their Blueberry Mojitos. They make it fresh and tasty! The bar is a little small but it's good for a little group. They have more seating in the back. If you want to start off your night right, you have to stop by St. Joe's.

When I walked into St. Joe's last night I was overcome by an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia... it is true what they say, you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone. I always took St. Joe's for granted because it was the dive, hole in the wall bar down my street, but my god you don't see places like these anywhere else in the nation! Its tiny. When you first walk in you have the bar to your left and a very tight hallway/pathway leading to the back, where a pool table is crammed in...it gets cozy in here, definitely not a place to watch a sports event, it is more of an intimate environment. The decor is amazing! a mixture of baroque and New Orleanean, with weird religious artifacts hanging from the wooden walls (including a copper angel and a drawing of virgin mary) The back porch it's absolutely beautiful. They have an asian garden feel going on with beautiful red lanterns hanging from the gazebo-like hut where the back bar is located. The furniture is the typical wrought green iron patio furniture, and there are cute Buddha fountains in the corners. I have two words for you to remember: BLUEBERRY MOJITOS ... their signature drink is absolutely divine, and they use fresh blueberries to mix with the fresh mint.... hmm an elixir of life! The service is a toss up, sometimes they're in a good mood, sometimes they're in a bad mood, but they always deliver.

When my friend described St. Joe's, I heard "best mojitos" and "really smoky." Well, imagine my delight when we got there and found out that it's now smoke-free. Smoking is allowed on the patio out back, so everyone is happy. We ordered two mojitos and found seats up front for prime people watching. "I want to close out," said one guy. The bartender responded, "You already did. Your credit card is in front of you." The guy went back to being sloppy and nuzzling his lady friend, which turned into a "How many mojitos did he have?" guessing game for us. The mojitos are the real deal; the bartender muddles the mint and makes each mojito, one at a time. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back, but St. Joe's is worth stopping in if you're in the area. Come here, drink a mojito, and be happy.

Try the Blueberry Mojitos. They are SO fresh, and not in any way sugary/candy-like which is amazing. I'll be honest, I come here because they make a mean Pimm's Cup. Better than Napoleon House (which is hard to do).

In my great pursuit of "my bar" I tried St. Joes one weekday night. Inside bar is pretty standard and surprisingly unadorned. I'm not sure what I was expecting after reading all these reviews. Something more polished probably. I agree that the beer on tap selection is totally rockin' and the blueberry mojitos are delicious. The back bar seems like a nice place to hang out too. Best part about the bar is most certainly the jukebox selection. Jazz, blues, etc. My problem: My friend and I were dressed nicely and I tipped adequately (generously, even) yet the bartender consistently served his regulars first. And I'm not a jerk. Is my money not green? Not appreciated, you aloof bartender. Remember, 3 stars = A-OK. I wouldn't be opposed to returning, but I might not suggest St. Joes when deciding where to go spend some time.

There aren't that many decent bars uptown (to me that means places where you don't have to shout to communicate, that aren't overpriced, and aren't too smoky) but St. Joe's makes it on all counts. The back porch is great and I like that they have beer specials, like $3 Abitas. By the way, the place has character but I wouldn't describe it as "super dingy" or dirty as one reviewer does.

SMOKE-FREE: On a quest to cool off after shopping Magazine Street, we were in search of a smoke-free bar and found St. Joe's. Thank you fellow yelpers! BLUEBERRY MOJITO: Even if you aren't a mojito fan, this signature drink deserves a try. It is by far the best mojito I've ever had with a crisp and refreshing taste. I watched the bartender use a muddler to crush the mint leaves and blueberries together so that they marinated in harmony. It was amazing how meticulous the bartender was - he seems to have a talent that many mixologists are lacking these days. Another couple at the bar saw our amazing drinks and decided they wanted blueberry mojitos too! FRESH: After speaking with the bartender, I learned that they use fresh juices for their drinks. This can transform a drink from average to superior. It's the extra steps that St. Joe's takes that makes them stand out. PATIO: The back patio is a nice place to chill out and is a good escape when the bar gets crowded. The decor on the patio is funky and eclectic with Chinese lanterns hanging above a church-like setting. I guess I can always go to confession after I sin with too many blueberry mojitos!

Yesterday was a sort of fruity beverage pilgrimage for me & a friend in from out of town (list idea! stay tuned for the other stops). We ventured all the way uptown, by street car from the french quarter, just for a St Joe's signature Blueberry Mojito. The other reasons we madly had to get there and ignored the 12 block walk from St Charles to Magazine St, is the outdoor patio in the back. I love every plant, statue, and lantern back there. We went in the early evening, almost sundown time, where it wasn't too crowded and everything out back seemed bathed in orange. Did I mention the mojitos are fresh & muddled? Or that the women's bathroom has random tiled, mirrored, mosaic walls? I also happened to run into a few yelpers there too, Jessica, Scott & co and collected myself some new yelp gear to boot! So I must've been in in the right place at the right time, and plan on making it a permanent staple on any future frooty booty birthday crawl!

I love that it's smoke free inside! My favorite part about hanging out here is outside in the patio. Even though it was VERY cold this past Friday night, I preferred sitting out there than inside because it wasn't as packed. They were very nice about us bringing in outside food. I was there from 7-10 pm, and I slowly saw the place fill up, but it was full-ish already when I got there at 7. I don't know when happy hour ends, but it starts when it opens. I don't know all the beer prices, but the happy hour prices for beer was $3.50, and $3.50 for well drinks. Blueberry mojitos (super yummy, and fresh blueberries too!) were $6.50. And you spend at least $10 for a credit card. which isn't too bad if you open a tab for the night.

This bar was good, a very out of date beer menu but had a lot of good selection. Beers that are usually much more expensive were available here at a very good price.

Best Mojitos + Great location + patio = good local chill bar I like St Joes because it has the best Mojitos in the city and it has a great location and is rarely packed. There is a nice outside patio in the back and the bar inside has plently of seating. I recently brought friends from out of town here because it is a local bar with character. Parking is a hassle because it is on Magazine but when you do find a spot you can get drinks and dinner without driving. Did I mention the blueberry Mojitos? Love that they have a signature drink that is great and well priced. Its not a college bar and its not a sports bar which is why I really like it.

This is a bar I had been hankering to go to. I really liked it. We arrived at about 6, and it was not crowded. We sat at the table in the front window, chilled over cocktails, and discussed the day's events. Great ambiance, great bartender too.

contrary to yelp's categorization, st. joe's is decisively not a dive bar--especially considering its proximity to ms. mae's, brother's three, grit's, F&M's, et al. st. joe's is actually a contender for the mother of all uptown neighborhood corner bars, provided you don't go on busy, standing-room-only nights (thursday-saturday), when a large portion of tulane and loyola's law, business, and medicine programs come to roost (no offense to uptown's young republicans; i just like m'bars heterogenous). this is a warmly-lit, wooden interiored den of refuge reminiscent of every third tavern north of downtown chicago, but with a cheeky new orleans catholic decor. amazingly, it's managed to harbor none of the bougie silliness that's come to monopolize the surrounding four or five blocks. even speciality cocktails are (still) affordable and generally well-made, their rotating beer selection is better than most, the patio is perhaps the most instagrammed in the city, the music is motown, and the bartenders are good people*. * george in particular should have a statue erected in his honor somewhere in the vicinity; he's like the archetypal neighborhood bartender that you'd find in richard scarry or other children's books, if children's books dealt with bartenders.

Oh blueberry mojito how I love you so. There is no where you can go that will make you a better mojito. I prefer this bar on weeknights when it isn't super busy. You'll get better service, and it's nice to be able to sit down. Bar area is pretty small, but there is a great patio out back. Be careful about parking in the pinkberry lot. I know a few people who have been towed :(

  • Nick A.

Not a bad place to go, but certainly far from my favorite on magazine. Service is VERY spotty - sometimes it's not a problem, and sometimes it seems like you could have jogged a mile or two it takes so long for them to take your money and give you a drink. Lots of love for the blueberry mojitos here - and they are pretty good (if pricey.) You just have to decide if you want to have your head feel like a chimpanzee with a tire iron is bludgeoning you to death the next morning when you drink them; they are skull crushers. Ambiance is kind of cool - a patio is always a plus. You may have some trouble maneuvering around the pool table if folks are playing, but no more than any other bar on a crowded night. This is a place I rarely recommend to a group of friends, but when people go there, I don't offer up an alternative, since I don't hate it. It may not be a glowing recommendation, but take that however you want to. I will also second the fact that this place is really not a dive bar....there are plenty of other, far, far divier options up and down magazine.

NOW SMOKE FREE!! St Joe's is one of those weird little New Orleans places that I love. It's a total dive, but it has a few redeeming qualities: 1) The place is decorated like a rejected church. The crosses hanging from the ceilings and the dim lighting was enough to creep out this Catholic girl the first time I set foot in the place. Just sitting at the bar makes you think you are doing something wrong. 2) A good jukebox. Great tunes and although the place can get cramped, there is bound to be something in there that the crowd will love. 3) A signature drink. Here, it's the mojito. They have the regular one and the blueberry one. Don't ask me about either, as I don't drink liquor. I've heard they are good. I think I had one once, but I wasn't impressed, but trust me, I'm not the one to judge. 4) The patio. You can sit outside when the weather is nice and you'll feel like you are in a tropical paradise. The patio is decorated with banana trees and there is an outside bar, which is always packed (get there early) when it isn't in the 90s. 5) Everything else. A pool table, awesome atmosphere, nice people, and they allow dogs. What more could you want? Did I mention that the place is smoke free now??

  • Danie R.

This place and their blueberry mojitos. YUM! It's probably their most popular drink so the bartenders have it down to a science and it comes out pretty quickly unlike most mojitos. I really dug the cute patio out back and if I was still a smoker I'd like it even more. There's also a second bar out back! It's dark and intimately lit, but not too loud. Might be a good date spot...

Finally had the famed blueberry mojito.. it was good, not great. Now, I don't know if you know anything about muddling, but it does not mean crushing the blueberries to an untimely death. I also don't think it had much in the way of liquor, to be honest, and at $6, I want to get at least a full shot (which seems difficult in those small glasses). I prefer Three Muses' strawberry mojito personally (which is $7-8, twice as big, and has significantly more fruit/flavor). Other than that, I like St. Joe's atmosphere, it's dark but not too dark and loud but not too loud. The place is a bit small, so I would second Tina H.'s recommendation to only go with a couple of people.

Great blueberry mojitos. Refreshing patio with banana trees and citronella candles makes night time drinking enjoyable and relaxing. Not much room in the bar, it gets congested in the area between the bar and the bathrooms/pool table. Expand that and they're golden.

One of my favorite watering holes. Bartenders are friendly and they make an excellent blueberry mojito! Great place to grab a drink after work or 2am. Also nice patio space in the back.

You can't ask for a better neighborhood bar. Delicious drinks at a decent price, a classic jukebox (NOT a computer) stocked with the best motown and classic rock and an atmosphere that stands out - even in a city full of atmosphere.

  • Eira T.

St Joe's is a really solid neighborhood bar. It's non-smoking which is awesome, and never totally crowded or full of creepy dudes trying to interrupt you and your lady friend just having a beer. Decorated as if an old-school Catholic church unloaded several of its fixtures at a dingy flea market. Good place to meet up with a friend for a beer and catching up.

  • Jill W.

St. Joe's definitely deserves a "Hell Yes." from me. It's my kind of place and my kind of crowd. It's never rowdy. I'm a beer-alcoholic, but being raised part Cuban, I love mojitos, and yes, the blueberry mojito is not only a creative drink, but it's damn good. Take if from somone who knows (and even travelled to Cuba and tasted them). Damn good, I say. Some say they are just "okay." Guess it depends on the barista? Maybe it's because I don't drink them too much? Who gives. Can't wait to go here after the Mardi Gras shehbangs are over (just because it's a pain to drive, don't get me wrong. Not dissing carnival :D) Three cheers for this place.

Even though it's Uptown, I'm a fan of St. Joe's Bar. However, because it's Uptown, it's on the other side of the earth, and therefore I don't get to hang out here very often. It's a laid back bar, non-smoking as of recently, with a pool table inside and a nice patio outside. There's probably a lot of smoke outside nowadays, since people can't smoke inside the bar. It's located across the street, more or less, from Whole Foods. That's about all I can think of to tell you about St. Joe's. Good place, good people, inconvenient (for me) location.

So, I finally got to try the award winning mojito...um, yea, no thanks. I've had way, way, way better in this city. The blueberries were not fresh and the drink itself tastes like it was poured out of a bottle bought pre made at the supermarket. Not even sure if there was alcohol in it. My mixologist bro couldn't even drink his Manhattan cocktail. So, if you're an easy beer or alcohol on the rocks drinker, this place is good for you. The atmosphere and decor is pretty cool minus the uppidy bartender. And it's rad that they're smoke free and allow dogs.

I originally didn't didn't think too much of this place. It's a bit of a snug fit at times and I used to run into waaay too many of my classmates here. But blueberry mojitos = love love love. Hands down, one of of my favorite drinks ever! That brisk crushing of a few blueberries just really compliments mojitos. I think because blueberries kind of have a subtle mint initial bite - am I the only person who thinks this? Probably. It's a shame that the bartenders meticulously meter out their pours for all the drinks, but I'm willing to overlook it, just this once. On weekdays, particularly mid-week, this place is outfitted with mostly locals and it doesn't get particularly jam-packed. It's not exactly a college hang out bar during this time period, thank sweet Jaysus. I feels like a friendly subdued neighborhood bar. You can mostly keep to yourself or strike up a conversation with the nearest local near to you. The adorable patio (complete with it's own bar are) remains mostly empty, but if you desired more isolation - check out it. St Joe's is definitely a dive bar - a little shabby, a little unkempt, but yet not dingy feeling. Being a dive bar aficionado, this perfect balance appeals to me. During weekends, this place can be quite the place to be. It's a little more dense with the college and law school crowd. It was often the after stop or pre-really going out destination for me in my heyday. Service can be painstakingly delayed on the busier days and the there's a single toilet bathroom for the ladies, which can be a pain in the butt. But really, check out the courtyard/patio. Simply adorable with the dozens of Chinese lanterns. I highly recommend this place to anyone hoping to get away from the usual Magazine Street bars.

It's not open until 5 - there's tons o' shoppers and worker bees who could use a midday drink to take the edge off. That's just a revenue stream lost... What's with mojitos served...in a SNIFTER? That's not pleasant for anyone. The decor's fine, the bartenders range from charming to devoid of all personality. It's not a destination bar - there's plenty of places closer to your home who can serve you.

A little awkward flow as you try to make your way from the front bar to the back patio but just politely move your fellow waste cases out of your way and venture to a quiet spot in the back. Enjoy some pool or get down on bended knee and confess all the sinful things you're about to do. Reasonably priced drinks, and hey, your bartender might even forget to charge you for half your order if you're lucky. I was there on a Friday night and the crowd wasn't too rowdy. You can actually have conversations with your friends in this place. Lots of great beer selections! I didn't get to try their infamous mojito but I will the next time I visit.

I seriously adore this place and come here whenever I can drag people with me. Mojitos are my favorite mixed drink, so that's what initially brought me here. The patio area is my favorite of all patio areas. The atmosphere is lovely, and I've had a good time every time I've come here. The bartenders aren't the absolute friendliest, but that's probably because making mojitos is annoying.

I am *always* down to get some mojitos at St. Joe's bar. Now that they've gone smoke-free, I am going to do my best to make a few more visits. It's (I think) conveniently located one block from Jefferson and Magazine at Magazine and Octavia--across the street from Slice, Whole Foods and Pinkberry. Besides bomb-a** mojitos, St. Joe's has a great selection from the bar and for beer on tap and in bottles. I suppose parking can be tough, but I recently discovered a parking lot behind Slice meant for a number of Magazine Street shops that was empty when I walked by. Don't be hesitant to push your way past the bar if it's crowded because there's more room in the back (including a pool table, rest rooms and an outdoor seating area). The bartender has been there for years and he takes his time making the mojitos which is the *right* way to make a mojito. It's muddled to perfection and he probably has carpel tunnel from all the muddling he's done throughout the years. To him I say: "Keep it up, Buddy, for you bring happiness to the mouths of many."

I really like their patio. It's almost kind of magical, just really pretty and unlike any place I've been to. The mojitos are ok. Nothing to get crazy about but I like the fresh blueberries. Also, the bartenders are nice and I like that there's no smoking inside.

The blueberry mojitos are delicious. I often crave them, which is rough now that I live all the way in mid-city. I like the crowed- young, but mature and not snooty. That's a rare combination.

Blueberry Mojitos! Believe dat! Yah they are pretty good, kind of tangy, but the ladies love them. This place also has a fine selection of beers on tap, and the patio is top notch. The interior is dimly lit and unassuming, save the few religious artifacts on the walls. Paying respect to St Joe perhaps? It's pretty much the perfect place to just kick back, relax, and have a few drinks. Definitely recommended.

Ditto on the blueberry mojitos! I've got Diabetes, Type I & got them without simple syrup & they were still delicious. Brought my greyhound & sat out back in their funky courtyard. A lovely way to spend a couple of hours catching up with a friend. (& a serious round of applause for the bartender who has to prep like a mother f*#$%r for all those mojito orders ;-)

Booyah for the blueberry mojito! St. Joe's is a perfect Uptown crossroads, hip old school Catholicity up front, pool table crammed in halfway with a slice of open air patio in the back, rounded out with a strangely pleasant pagoda-like hall. The bar is not too divey, not too hip. Just about right. Great for getting in an actual conversation, but not dead by any means. Mostly younger crowd most of the time - but the pool table sports some interesting patrons at times. Friendly and easy-going bartenders. The single walkway along the bar gets packed at times. There's really no night of the week that couldn't conceivably include a brief stint at St. Joe's for one reason or another. I know a person who goes there to read early on slower week nights and one who even gets some light schoolwork done with a beer in hand. A versatile neighborhood bar.

On my last night visiting New Orleans, my sister and I met up with her friends at their favorite dive, St. Joe's. I am a little biased against New Orleans bars as smoking bans have long since been the law of land in Colorado and smokey bars are not my favorite thing. However, we were able to snag a table on their Asian themed back porch area and settled in for fun night of cocktails and friends. The best thing about St. Joe's is easily their $5 mojitos. They were poured strong, tasted fantastic, and come in classic and blueberry. The worst thing about the bar would be the lack of bathrooms- the bar gets crowded and there is a single bathroom for both men and women.

St. Joe's Bar is very representative of New Orleans itself; underneath the Catholic names, themes and facade lies something deeper, older and surprisingly foreign. The main front bar is fully graced with a huge collection of Catholic artwork, chandeliers, pews, statues, crucifixes, etc. The back patio is a completely different environment, with dozens of red Chinese lanterns haning over the Eastern-style bar. St. Joe's has solid selection of imports and BOMB blueberry mojitos. I would recommend arriving early on peak drinking days, as this place can get pretty packed.

super dingy, dark and dirty, but the blueberry mojitos are worth the visit! although they have 0 liquor in them and you can drink about 5 in a minute, still worth trying!

Great neighborhood bar! Pet friendly, and now smoke free (you can still smoke in the patio area). Yes, the blueberry Mojito is the drink of choice here, but the bartenders are capable of more. Speaking of, the bartenders are friendly, they'll be your new best friend by your third visit. Yes it is small, but I think that is a plus!

Ended up here on Lundi Gras Eve 2009 with a coworker and her sister. They were both originally from New Orleans, and it was my first time there. They highly recommended the place and since we were just leaving Bacchus, it seemed like a good idea. First, it's all about the back bar. The front bar is about as big as a tool shed (and was full of tools come to think of it). But the back was pretty cool place to hang out and drinks were pretty strong (it was Mardi Gras after all). The folks were pretty friendly, especially since I had an out-of-state license and it was clear I wasn't a native. Mostly, I enjoyed the vibe of the back bar. Dim lighting, pews, etc. Something about the French gothic feel did it for me. Needless to say, we don't get a lot of places like that in WI. Best bar I've ever been to? Naw. Decent bar with something interesting to offer? Definitely.

"I.D. please." I give the kid a smile. He is a skinny guy sitting on a stool outside that greets me with a book in hand. "Is that for school?" "Nah" just reading. I can't remember, but the author is Russian and it's definitely not light reading. He seems to emulate one of the mad Russian writers. Longish hair, longer eyes, he's almost penitent. What's he reading? Maybe it's Dostoevsky? This place feels holy. I may need to take a knee. The place makes me feel like dark velvet. The bar is ghostly, and I feel a little chill, but one of my friends takes my hand and guides me in. She's always doing that. Pictures of Saints on the wall, excellent imports on tap, and the famous blueberry mojitos. The decor is comfortably shabby. A lot of people don't mention this, but this place has a kickass patio which I head straight for when I go, and it's HEATED. Something good to note when it gets cold. There's also another bar out back sometimes serving this patio. I always feel relaxed here, maybe it's the eyes of all those saints or the smiling contemplative intellectual at the door that makes me feel this is a hallowed place. A monastery to contemplate, drink, and be merry. I stretch my neck and notice the beautifully tooled wooden ceiling. The kind that they don't make anymore more, from times when beauty sometimes outpaced function. The mojitos are made with fresh blueberries and a battered wooden pestle. My heart skips a beat seeing the garish, malevolent thing with all these medieval church like surroundings, before it delves deep into my mojito. If you want a chill spot to take it easy and get into one of those intricate conversations about deep subjects with your friends, you can't go wrong with the back patio of St. Joe's. It's good to be here with good friends a friendly staff and good drink, a decent jukebox, and pool tables. Could you ask for more?

What a great place to grab a drink. Their specialty is the mojito, and they do a darn good job with it. The blueberry mojito is a bit fruity for me, but I can appreciate it's appeal. The pool table is good before it gets too crowded. I spent a fun new years eve in the back patio several years back. Leave you pretentions at the door.

  • Remahn F.

  • Zoey R.

  • Lauren R.

One of my favorite places in New Orleans. Bartenders are Friendly and drinks are Great. The crowds are more on the educated side. If you're a non-douche, I would highly recommend.

Definitely.

Awesome mojitos, knowledgeable bar staff, and an overall good vibe make this a favorite place to take friends from out of town. As a few of the previous post mentioned the "blueberry mojitos" are nothing short fo spectacular.

super dingy, dark and dirty, but the blueberry mojitos are worth the visit! although they have 0 liquor in them and you can drink about 5 in a minute, still worth trying!

    (3)
  • Dawn V.

"I.D. please." I give the kid a smile.

  • John G.

  • Laura H.

  • Jackie A.

I really like their patio. It's almost kind of magical, just really pretty and unlike any place I've been to. The mojitos are ok. Nothing to get crazy about but I like the fresh blueberries. Also, the bartenders are nice and I like that there's no smoking inside.

    (4)

  • Josh W.
